Mimosa strigilossa, Green Roof Plant for Arid Climates 

M. strigilossa is a great green roof plant for many reasons.  She is native to Florida and the Americas but has been used as a ground cover worldwide and can be found almost everywhere.  Powderpuff carpets the ground quickly and serves as an excellent erosion control plant.

She has brilliant pink flowers in the late spring and early summer, reaching up like neon lights.  Spreading by stolons, she quickly fills in void and open areas across a green roof or a landscape and can tolerate partial shade to full sun. 


M. strigilossa est une superbe plante pour toit végétal pour beaucoup de raisons. Elle est originaire de Floride et des Amériques mais utilisée comme couvre-sol partout dans le monde. Avec sa croissance rapide elle est excellente contre l'érosion du sol. 

Elle a des fleurs roses brillantes de la fin du printemps au début de l'été qui illuminent comme mille lumières. Se propageant par stolons elle remplit rapidement les vides sur un toit végétal ou au jardin et supporte aussi bien la mi-ombre que le plein soleil.

As a member of the Fabaceae family, she fixes nitrogen into the soil, serving as a nutrient provider for green roof soils and for drought tolerant landscapes.  M. strigillosa exhibits hybrid C4 photosynthesis, increasing her ability to withstand drought.

She likes poor soils with low nutrient levels and thrives in most areas of the green roofs where other plants have difficulty.  She is related to a group of plants whose leaves move when touched, hence the name 'sensitive plant'.

Cuttings of the plant stolons may be replanted with ease and under optimum growing conditions she will cover most problematic open areas on green roofs.

Her bright pink flowers are attractive to pollinators and insects and she plays an important component in enriching biodiversity across a landscape of green roof. She is ranked high on lists of drought tolerant, water conservation friendly planting designs.  M. strigilossa is now often used to plant along the roadsides and highways for beauty, color, minimal maintenance and erosion control.

Powderpuff should be an integral part of any green roof design in arid, hot climates.

Appartenant à la famille de Fabaceae, elle fixe l'azote dans le sol, apportant ainsi des éléments nutritifs aux sols d'un toit végétal ainsi qu'au paysages secs. Son appartenance au groupe de photosynthèse C4 augmente sa capacité à résister à la sécheresse. 

Elle aime les sols pauvres avec les niveaux nutritifs bas et prospère sur la plupart des toits verts où les autres plantes ont de la difficulté. Elle appartient à un groupe de plantes dont les feuilles bougent quand on les touché, d'ou son nom ‹ Sensitive plant ›  en anglais. 

On facilement repiquer les stolons pour la multiplier et elle couvrira ainsi rapidement les secteurs vides les plus problématiques sur votre toit végétal.

Ses fleurs roses brillantes sont attrayantes aux pollinisateurs et aux insectes et elle joue un rôle important pour la biodiversité. Elle est classée sur les listes de plantes très tolérantes à la sécheresse. M. strigilossa est maintenant souvent utilisé sur les bords des routes pour sa beauté, sa couleur, son besoin d'entretien minime et sa capacité à retenir l'érosion du sol..
