Chionanthus virginicus destined for a Green Roof

Grancy Grey beard is a small tree or large shrub in the olive family, Oleaceae and native to the southeastern United States.

He is also known by the common name, White Fringe Tree and produces stunning arrays of fringe-like white flowers in the early spring.  Here in Jacksonville there is a beautiful specimen planted in front of the zoo.

A member of the olive family, the fruits are small dark colored drupes and make an excellent food source for wildlife, including birds.

Ethnobotanically, the bark has been used to treat gall-bladder and liver inflammation and there is some scientific evidence pointing to possible effects of lowering sugar levels.

Chionanthus virginicus can take partial shade to full sun.

Grancy Grey Beard’s height on a green roof will be influenced by the depth of the green roof soil media and available irrigation and nutrients supplied.  He has proved to be a hardy, wind and drought tolerant green roof plant, slow growing and supportive of biodiversity.

Use a green roof soil media with an acidic pH and high organic content.

L'Arbre à neige est un petit arbre ou un grand arbrisseau de la famille des Oleaceae natif du Sud-Est des Etats-Unis. Son nom "Arbre à neige" lui vient de son étourdissante floraion printanière - il se couvre alors de fleurs blanches. Ici à Jacksonville il y a un magnifique spécimen planté devant le zoo. 

C'est un membre de la famille des oliviers et ses fruits, de petites drupes sombres ressemblant à des olives, sont une excellente source de nourriture pour la faune, y compris les oiseaux. 

En médecine l'écorce a été utilisée pour traiter des inflammations de vésicule biliaire et du foie, et il y a quelques rapports scientifiques qui l'indiquent pour abaisser le niveau de sucre dans le sang. 

Chionanthus virginicus pousse à la mi-ombre ou en plein soleil. Sur un toit vert sa taille sera influencée par la profondeur du substrat, de l'irrigation disponible ainsi que nutriments présents dans le sol. Il s'est révélé être une plante de toit végétal très résistante au vent et à la sécheresse, grandissant lentement et soutenant à merveille la biodiversité de la faune locale. Il préfère néanmoins un substrat avec un pH acide et assez de matière organique.
