Comme la belle Gazania, Lampranthus coccineus est originaire d'Afrique du Sud. Cette vivace succulente formera un véritable tapis rouge une fois implantée sur le toit végétal. Ses fleurs d'un rouge éclatant fleurissant du printemps à l'automne, s'ouvrant le matin avec le soleil et se refermant le soir.
Totalement insensible à la sécheresse ce Ficoïde supporte tous les sols bien drainés, même pauvres. Et, si on le retrouve maintenant en tant que plante cultivée dans les jardins à travers le monde entier, c'est l'origine une plante côtière – qui est donc parfaitement adapté vents salés du bord de mer ainsi qu'aux embruns. Elle reste toutefois peu tolérante au gel et ne survit guère à plus de -4°.

De croissance rapide et pouvant atteindre une hauteur de 40 – 60 cm il est toutefois à placer dans des endroits ou il ne risque pas d'étouffer des plantes plus basses. Très résistant au déssechement du vent il est idéal à placer en bordure d'un toit végétal, il protègera ainsi les plantes plus au centre du vent et de plus formera des cascades retombantes magnifiquement décoratives le long des murs.
